Hermanus Fat Bikes

There are 3 different types of Fat Bike activities in Hermanus.
Keep scrolling to view all three!

De Kelders Beach Trail

Duration: 2 – 3 hours
You will meet your guide at the Base in De kelders, then drive to Walker Bay Nature Reserve. In Whale Season (July-December) you may see Whales close to the rocks & you can even  stop to enjoy them before the ride.
When reaching the Nature Reserve entrance you will ride down the 4×4 trail to the beach. The 4×4 trail is quite a long one taking you along the Die Plaat cliffs. You will get some soft sandy patches where you will have the chance to try out the fat tires before getting to the beach.
You can rest along the way, remember this is not a race, this is for pure enjoyment and to take in the sights as well as enjoying the sensation of riding on sand without getting stuck. When you reach the end of the 4×4 trail you will get pure white beach all of the way to Hermanus.
You can then decide between us how far we want to go and this will depend on your comfort on the bikes as well as weather and beach conditions. Along the ride you will have plenty of opportunities to stop, rest and take photos and if lucky we will find the odd seal taking a nap on the beach.
During Whale season you can keep our eyes peeled for Whales and it is common to see Dolphins in the summer months. If we are really lucky you may even see a Great White Shark cruising along the backline of the waves.

Hermanus Beach Trail

Duration: 2 – 3 hours

The guide can pick you up from your accommodation in Hermanus or Gansbaai or meet at Dutchies restaurant at Grotto Beach.
After a briefing and practice on the bikes you will set off up the Beach. Hopefully along the way we may see the odd seal in the water or on the beach. The ride to the rock is roughly 6km where you will stop, swim, refresh yourselves and have a look inside the cave.
This cave is famous as a guy lived in it for over a year!

The ride is beautiful and at low tide fairly easy to do.

Sand Dunes Trail

Duration: 2 – 3 hours.

This is the ultimate ride from near Grootbos nature reserve down the mountain to the top of the Sand Dunes. The trail to the dunes is special, running on a narrow sandy horse trail through the Fynbos. When reaching the dunes you and your guide will make your way up and across to reach a fantastic downhill section where you will pick up speed before reaching the top of your first vertical dune face.
After a briefing on how to ride down the dune you will ride down the face of the dune, but for those just wanting an easy ride you can go around the side where it has an easy slope. The dune face may feel impossible and dangerous to do but the ride is in fact very controlled and the sand will slow the bike down.

What your mind tells you is impossible will in fact be very enjoyable and easy.

Your guide will be at the bottom of the dunes videoing your challenges so remember to smile.  the guide will also teach you how to do slalom like a skiier on a snow ski slope. This is excellent fun on a bike and not too difficult to achieve.
After the dunes you will pick up a 4×4 trail down to the beach. From there you will head back up to the car park. For those who are already tired the guide can bring the 4×4 down to the rocks so you do not have to ride up!
